Generals Die in Bed by Charles Yale Harrison
3.5

Read this out loud to my senior English students. Their general review was…boring, until I re-enacted several of the scenes to put them into perspective. I played all the roles and really dramatized/modernized the language.
Is this a book I would have picked up on my own? No, but the rest of the teachers were using it as an intro to the short-story unit so I followed along. Was it good? …listen…it has a purpose. I’m not the right audience, and I know that. It is well written, if not briefly written, so I have to given credit there. The pacing is odd, but so is war, and the characters are flat, but that was the point.
Just like my students, I feel conflicted.
