Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari
5.0

** So... First of all, if you haven't heard Aziz do any of his stand up, I highly suggest that you go check him out so you can read this book in his voice!! **

After reading just the first two sentences ("OH, shit! Thanks for buying my book."), I knew I was going to love it. For those of you that have heard Aziz, you totally read that quote in his voice, didn't you? :)

The information and studies that were included in this book were extremely interesting. Some of them were a bit shocking to me, a few made me angry or sad, while others made me think, "YES! WE NEED MORE PEOPLE LIKE THIS GUY/GIRL!" I read this book in just a couple of sittings because I was so interested in learning more!

To those that know me, it's not surprising that I have very strong feelings about technology and how it affects the dating process (see my personal note below). I, personally, wasn't looking for any kind of relationship advice when I picked up this book. I was just interested to see Aziz's take on "Modern Romance." However, I found that his book sparked quite a few interesting conversations with my boyfriend. So whether your are single, committed, or in a complicated relationship, there will be surprising and helpful advice in this book for you whether you are looking for it or not. I found myself getting angry and upset during some bits (specifically the parts about cheating), but overall I found this book to be extremely enjoyable and VERY funny!

Trust me, if you've dated in the "modern" world, you are going to find a lot of this book absolutely hysterical. Maybe you'll learn a thing or two and maybe it will help your dating in the future! Also, once you've read this book, you have to check out his new show on Netflix, "Master Of None." You'll recognize quite a few scenes and situations int he show from his book. :)

Highly recommended to everyone!

A more personal note:
I think I may have reacted so strongly to certain parts of this because I met my boyfriend online, on match.com to be specific, and things are going wonderfully! To be totally honest, before I met Alex, I did see the dark side of online dating. I got creepy messages, I had stalkers, I had a few dates that went terribly, and I was about to cancel my match subscription. But the thing is...The same nasty things that were happening online were also happening in the "real world"! After sifting through the garbage online, I was able to see how amazing online dating can be if you take a positive approach.

SO for those of you about to give up, or not sure if you want to even try online dating- I say go for it! What can it hurt? Just be careful, be smart, don't be afraid to use the "block" button, don't engage with the nasties, and have fun with it! Also keep in mind that this process takes time- just because you're online doesn't mean you'll get the instant gratification like you're so used to. Finding a good match takes time and plenty of face-to-face human interaction rather than just screen time. Let online platforms begin the process, but never underestimate the importance of spending time together.
