How Long 'til Black Future Month?
by N.K. Jemisin
Jemisin is one of our greatest living writers. This collection of short stories was not at all what I expected from the title. It’s not just Afrofuturist sci fi (though perhaps I was a bit too ready to make that assumption). Rather it’s some of the most creative, innovative short writing I’ve read. Every story is completely distinct from the others, ranging from fantasy, Sci fi and contemporary magical realism. Jemisin has an amazing range of narrative voices, messages, and writing styles. She is a master world builder, immersing you into the foreign, future, or past within a few short pages. In some ways this collection blew me away more than her full length novel series. Just absolutely loved it.
