A Blade So Black
by L.L. McKinney
adventurous
medium-paced
Over all, this was an okay read. I was expecting something interesting since it was an Alice in Wonderland retelling but I don't think I really got it. I give it an ambivalent three stars. I just wasn't that into it. There were some good things, but the indifferent or bad kind of outweighed them.
The beginning threw you into the story without providing enough background (or at least not enough for me to be drawn in emotionally). The connection to the original wonderland was confusing and not in a whimsical sort of way. Then middle of the book seemed to drag. I also wasn't big on the action sequences, but that is totally on me - it's just not what I'm into. The love interest situation was off-putting.
I'm really not sure if I will be looking into the sequel. I am sort of interested in how it ends - but I'm not sure if I can get past the issues I had with the romance to give it a try when I was so indifferent about so many aspects of this book.
