I was absolutely fascinated by the historical context of this novel. I found myself enthralled by Belle and the world she was immersed in, including the lengths in which she went to protect herself and her family. THE PERSONAL LIBRARIAN made me rethink my perception on “passing” - it’s not so much the fault or a flaw in the Black person who feels they must hide their Blackness in order to have some happiness. The fault lies squarely on the society that has created conditions so dark that immersing yourself in a society that ultimately hates you is your only option.
