The Scot Beds His Wife
by Kerrigan Byrne
I’ve heard so many people say Kerrigan Byrnes The Scot Beds His Wife was their least favorite in the series. I was so curious why. I find that I am in that boat as well.
The first 100 pages I thought were great. I was enjoying both characters a lot. I liked getting to know the heroine, Samantha’s, background. I did read The Highlander, and you get to meet Gavin and I was quite excited for his story.
The heroine totally ruined this story for me. You know how sometimes you just do not click with a character? This was it 100% for me. Sam is a foul mouthed American that comes to Scotland to aid a friend. She becomes the focus of Gavin as she is residing on land that he has been longing to own.
Most of Kerrigans books contain the f word, which doesn’t bother me (in fact I like it used sparingly in historical romance) but there is a lot in this book. So if you cannot abide it, probably skip this one. I will say, I read “Get the f*** off my land!” Like 5 too many times in this book...
I felt for Sam when she was first introduced. I thought she’d be a wonderful feisty match for Gavin. However, it seemed to me that after she was moved into her Scotland home her character totally changed. Just rude, obnoxious, f this, f that. Maybe I just find Americans annoying 😂😂 wait I’m American maybe I am this annoying as well and don’t want to face it 😂 but the heroine from Maya Rodale’s Chasing Lady Amelia, the hero from Karen Ranney’s The Texan Duke (or as I like to call it, Cowtopia), even Lillian from one of my favorites Lisa Kleypas’ It Happened One Autumn grated on my nerves a bit. So perhaps a personal dislike that won’t affect others.
Anyway, the book culminates with Sams past catching up to her and a rather HUGE lie/deception that I just basically found unforgivable. It worked out in the end but I think Gavin deserved so so much better.
I gave 3 stars because it had a lot I liked about it too. I enjoyed the secondary characters immensely. It has the tension and steam I love from this author.
Now I’m halfway done with The Duke with the Dragon Tattoo, and so far it’s my favorite of the whole series 😍
