I don't want to say that the last book in the Wayfarers trilogy disappointed me... but it did leave me feeling slightly underwhelmed. It's still a good book, I enjoyed reading it, but it didn't leave me with the same, wholesome, warm fuzzy feeling that the first two books left me with.
.
There isn't much of a plot with Record of a Spaceborn Few, it is literally just the record of a spaceborn few. We follow a handful of characters as they navigate their lives in the Exodus fleet, centuries after the last humans have left Earth. We learned a bit about the fleet in the first two books, but (I think, correct me if I'm wrong I read the other two books ages ago) this is the first time we see it firsthand.
.
One of the things I loved about the first two books was the inclusion of all the different species, learning about their customs and habits. This is largely absent here, as the Exodus Fleet is home to humans, relative newcomers to space. That is probably why my favourite chapters were Isabel's, who is hosting a fellow academic who happens to be a Harmagian, observing the human way of life on the fleet. I loved their interactions, and it gave a different perspective on the way humans adapted to their lives in space.
.
My other favourite was Eyas, a caretaker (sort of an undertaker), who is struggling to balance her work life with her personal life. I wasn't a massive fan of Kip though - although he is an accurately portrayed teenager with usual teenage problems (although in space), I just found him too whiny.
.
As usual, the LGBTQ+ rep from Becky Chambers was delightful. This book is also hugely sex positive which is always a plus too! I can't deny that it has some of the same feel-good vibes as the other two books, and I would recommend still picking it up if you've read and enjoyed the first two books in the trilogy!
