orange: The Complete Collection 1

What if you can send letters to your old self in the past to change the future. Would you do it? To save someone you care about?
I think the idea of this book, of sending letters to try to change a terrible outcome, works well but it has been done to death. What makes this book a stronger case for that plotline is the fact it heavily focuses on depression and suicide. Of course, this might be a tougher subject to read about for some. Everyone deals with different levels of depression, anxiety, and suicide tendencies can creep up on anyone.
Naho gets a letter from herself to save a boy named Kakeru's life. This poor kid is going through hell mentally and finally he finds a group of friends he really begins to enjoy being around. But Naho knows the future and what could happen so she tries to change little things everyday to help make his life better.
I think almost everything works here. The characters all have great chemistry. Watching them try to save a friend is done in a sad but impactful way. On top of that I love how depression is dealt here, and there is no simple "fix". I feel the story has a bit of fluff here and there and an annoying side character ex-girl that could just leave. But everything else really works. Also the art is great.
A 4 out of 5.
