It surprised me how much I ended up enjoying this book. At the beginning I was a bit unsure about the story, but as I read on it really picked up and by about halfway through I didn't want to put it down. The writing style is recognisably YA, fast paced and easy to read. 

The slightly bizarre plot involves were-dragons, heists and travel to an alternate reality. I liked the characters and relationships, and there are strong themes of family and friendship. 

I do think the book would have benefited from being perhaps 50 pages longer. More worldbuilding was needed both for the version of Earth in which the majority of the book is set, and particularly for the alternate reality. Certain events would also have benefited from having more pages devoted to them, while characters such as Benden deserved more development. 

Overall I had a good time with this, although it probably isn't a book I will reread. If you're looking for a fun, gripping dragon story that will keep you entertained for a few hours, this might fit the bill.
