Downpour
by Maggie Gates
I truly don't know how Maggie Gates does it! This was one of my most anticipated reads because I loved Dust Storm so much and really wanted to find out what happened to Ray after the heartbreaking and gutwrenching sneak peek we got at the end of the first book. I was waiting with bated breath and I'm SO happy I got the ARC of this amazing book. This book is truly everything I could ever want: grumpy/sunshine, cowboy, small town, age gap, boss/employee, rope play, and of course, spice that's hotter than the sun. It's so much more than tropes though, and I loved how Ray was written, because you could really feel his struggles come across the page and I felt for him. Please read the trigger warnings because it could be heavy and dark at times, but Maggie Gates did such a wonderful job in writing Ray and really diving into that state of depression and grief and loss that Ray experienced. Kudos to the author for such great disability representation. He was alive, but not really living, you know? Then here comes Brooke, the sunny and bubbly woman who won't stop talking and definitely doesn't back down when it comes to Ray, no matter how much he tries. It was such a beautiful thing to watch him blossom because of her, and to see them really develop their relationship. One thing I really loved was Brooke never treated Ray as less than even though he is a quadriplegic/paraplegic; she saw so much in him that even he couldn't see himself. I loved seeing everyone from the first book, like Christian and Cassandra and the girls, and they were the perfect addition to Ray's journey. I cannot say enough good things about this book!
If you're a fan of Elsie Silver, Brooke Montgomery, Catherine Cowles, or Devney Perry, then you’ll love Maggie Gates! Her books are amazing and every single one is worth the read.
