The Mechanics of Memory by Audrey Lee
3.0
slow-paced

‘Dr. Luke Salinger explores the science behind false memories and forces us to ask the chilling question what if everything we remember, never happened’

These few lines describe the cracks of the book and it is such an intriguing concept, and the author has come up with some very pertinent questions about the use of AI and science, and the people who practice them and the potential downfall that said can face.

We meet Hope when she is locked up in what sounds like a rehab facility, but for memories and a very expensive facility at that. We are told that she has forgotten last year of her life and she is there to recover it. There is a considerable amount of times spent explaining the facility and how it works and introducing us to some colourful characters that are present in this facility as patients and as doctors.

Since I don’t want to give spoilers, I will not go into the specific details of my issues with the plot of this book, there are some gaping holes in the storyline and the justification given to the reader about a lot of things that happened. Maybe this is why I did not enjoy reading the book.

I personally believe that this book could have been a lot better and engaging. And I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m not the right audience for this book.

The one thing that I really loved in this book in the beginning was a love story that was unfolding between Hope and Luke, but then even though the authorize really hard to get me to empathize with Luke, I just think he’s a douche bag, but that’s just me.

Thank you, netGalley and CamCat books for this advance readers copy for my honest opinion.
