I was all ready to give this book a solid 4 star rating because of the unnecessary romance adding nothing to the story but the end earned it that extra half star in my eyes.
Emika is a hacker who earns herself a spot in the biggest Warcross event of the year when she glitches into the opening ceremonies. For someone who was supposed to be as smart as she is, there were moments when I feel like she was pretty dumb. Overall, she wasn’t a bad main character though. She was smart and witty for the most part and incredibly naive at her worst moments.
Hideo was a little bit creepy in my opinion but, like I said, I felt like the whole romance thing was totally unnecessary to the overall plot. In fact, we probably could have had more details about the games if it hadn’t been for the fluff.
Overall, the premise to this book was super cool, a game sent in a virtual reality setting as millions watch on. I wish we could have had more of the story take place in those settings and hopefully the next book has more of them in it.
I’m looking forward to picking up the next book sometime soon!
