I am so disappointed in this book. I could see how people would enjoy it, as it's not an unenjoyable book, but it's not good. There's so much wasted potential.

Pirates! In a fantasy world!! And we get 0 world-building, a fantasy element that is brought up with 0 foreshadowing (at least they could have mentioned the rumour earlier in the book instead of mentioning AFTER the fantasy element come up out of nowhere), and then the main character blacks out and someone tests her powers so we learn all everything about it in a way that is pretending not to be an info dump.

Other than mentioning that all the characters are pirates, nothing remotely pirate-y happened. This plot could have been by any generic bad guy for any generic reason. The pirates here are a setting, nothing more.

Also, this girl can withstand interrogation but spills the second they threaten to cut her hair. Give me a break.

And the romance was not insta-love, luckily, but it was barely built up.

And the MC's inner monologue is so annoying a pretentious, going on and on about how she could just kill everyone here but rarely does anything truly badass or cool or smart.

Cool concept, not even an attempted execution. I honestly feel like this is a teen ya romance author trying to write fantasy and failing at every level of the genre.
