Through the Midnight Door by Katrina Monroe

dark emotional mysterious sad tense medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Loveable characters: Yes

I love books that are deeper than the obvious plot point. This is one of them on the face of it. This book is about three sisters, discovering a haunted house and a boy from a troubled background. Initially, when you start reading it, you think that this book is just going to be full of jump scares and a good time and you will be done with it when you reach the last page and close the book.

Don’t get me wrong this book has plenty of those and I am not kidding when I say I was looking over my shoulder in broad daylight while reading this.

However, somewhere around midpoint, you will start seeing that this book is about families that go through something dramatic and instead of dealing with it and talking about it they pretend it never happened. It is about how children deal with responsibilities and consequences that are placed on them before they’re old enough to deal with them.
This book has a beautiful study of what happens when parents stop parenting. This is also about how no matter what happens your siblings are who you can rely on.

You NetGalley and Poisoned pen press for sending me this advance reader copy I truly enjoyed it and highly recommend it.
