Koiramäen talvi by Mauri Kunnas
3.0

One of the most well-known Finnish authors, Mauri Kunnas has been a part of my life since I was little. Since Christmas is approaching, I wanted to take a break from my usual reading and go on an adventure to Christmasy Kunnas land. After that I'm going to be in a perfect mood and will begin eating, eating, and watching Christmas movies (Die Hard? Gremlins? Don't mind if I do. Maybe throw Black Christmas in there somewhere as well.).

As of now, this particular book of the Doghill series hasn't been translated in English, but the pictures alone are enough to give a general idea of life in the olden days in wintry 19th century Finnish countryside (despite the replacement of people with dogs, this is useful for both adults and kids alike as an introduction of sorts; if you know a little about Finland already, you might spot a very famous Finnish painter). The museum of Yli-Kirra served as the inspiration.

If you ever come to Finland, you'll get a similar experience in Luostarinmäki Handicrafts Museum. I've been there more times than I can count, but last week was my first visit during Christmas season. So peaceful and lovely details within the winter/Christmas theme. Felt like the whole village had suddenly disappeared into thin air to let visitors wander around their homes and shops. A violinist playing Christmas songs, handmade candy in paper cones, and sealed Christmas cards you can buy to take home or you can send them from the village post office with a special stamp etc.
