Better Than the Movies by Lynn Painter

Read it in one sitting, swooning while I should have been sleeping. Endless rom-com tropes and movie references, he falls first big we only get her POV, etc. It was adorable and heart warming and I want it to be a teen love movie for me to feel too old for while watching multiple times.

Reread 2025: I started this in February but my hold ran out so I didn't get to finish it until now, and then I ploughed through the last 3/4 of it just this morning because it's so good! I had a vague memory of really liking it when I read it a few years ago for a book club and now wanted to reread it before I read it's sequel. Now I'm worried for the sequel because we don't actually get them together until the very end of this one and I can only see that one working if there's tension for them. In this one Liz is obsessed with romcoms and romance in general and when her childhood crush moved back for their senior year she makes a deal with her annoying neighbor Wes for him to help her get the guy and then he'll get the parking spot they fight over near their houses. She can't see it but the reader quickly can that he's totally head over heels for her. It's sweet, goofy, swoony, and YA so not spicy at all but it feels like it would weird if it was because it's got 90s romcom vibes and those always end at the kiss
I still maintain this would make a great teen romcom tho and I'd watch the hell out of it when though I'm too old to be the target audience.
