Deeper Than the Dead
by Tami Hoag
I enjoyed the intricacies of this book, following the lives of the children involved and seeing their perspective. It's a smart storyteller who remembers that children see and understand a lot more than adults give them credit for.
However, I think Hoag spent too much time making sure we knew this was the 1980s and that the detectives had to be satisfied with good ol' fashioned police work rather than non-existent DNA testing and VICAP resources. With all the mentions of sprayed hair and shoulder pads, I was not likely to forget what year I was reading. Moustaches were all the rage at that time and Special Agent Vince Leone just looked like Magnum PI in my head.
