Endless thanks to Bezi @beingabookwyrm for brightening my life with this super cute recommendation! 🥰 If you need something fun and fluffy that will give you all the feels, then You Should See Me in a Crown by Leah Johnson is your answer!
.
Liz Lighty always thought she was too poor, too Black and too awkward to shine at her conservative, traditional high school. But when her financial plans for her dream college fall through, Liz remembers the scholarship money her school offers for winning prom king and queen... And so she gets to work campaigning to make prom court.
.
Honestly, I know this is meant to be an over-the-top prom-loving school, but I didn't even bat an eye at all the prom craziness 😂 As an observing Brit, I've always felt like Americans are so extra when it comes to prom, so this felt like par for the course. But just be aware that it is EXTRA extra, and that's what makes it so fun! Johnson also includes some more serious themes like grief and homophobia, but overall it is a feel-good fest.
.
I LOVED the characters in this book, not least Liz who is adorable and awkward and passionate, but also Jordan, new girl Amanda 'Mack', Mr K. Liz's brother Robbie, her grandma. It's quite a short book and more plot-driven than character-drive, but that doesn't mean Johnson has skimped on characters. They all feel real and they have their own quirks and flaws which makes you love them harder. And of the course, the romance! The beautiful, queer romance had my cheeks aching with how much I was smiling - TOO CUTE.

Please go and check out Bezi's @beingabookwyrm review a few rows down her feed, as she explains the necessity of writing happy ever afters for Black girls better than I ever could. And then go read this book and smile until your face hurts. 🥰
