A really good book for the precocious 11-year old you might know who's getting really into earth sciences. Much of the book is written accessibly and (frankly) for younger audiences, even if the concepts themselves are deeper. Occasionally the book's age belies itself, especially in Chapter 13 (also the longest) where it discusses some techniques that simply aren't used any longer (as with seismic surveillance) and references "new" projects from 2008-2009.

As another user said, it's very pared down in concept, but still, I could see young-me be all over this.
