A Torch Against the Night
by Sabaa Tahir
It was good, it was relatively fast paced, had nice twists and turns and unexpected moments, but i also found it a bit boring in some situations and very predictable in others.
So really it was a huge bag of mixed nuts?
The writing was nice.
i liked that Tahir only "reviewed" stuff from the first book for the first few pages and then moved on, which is something i always appreciate in authors, if they don't spend half of the second book re-caping what happened in the first one! But at the same time not everyone reads the first book right before starting the second so it is nice to have some small but important details told again.
even if to me that is always the neon light up sign for "look here, important information that will come up later in the book or series so you better remember it!"
But maybe that is just me.
I did like that there was some character development. There actually was characterization in both Laia and Elias -compared to the first book at least!- so that was nice. I always enjoy if characters actually have a little something to them so that i can tell them apart from the wall they are standing in front of.
I did not however enjoy that the book was now split into even more POVs.
And while i enjoyed Helene in the first book i really didn't enjoy her as much in this one. I can't really explain that. Maybe because her point of view wasn't very interesting to me or it was pretty much the same throughout the entire book -at least that is what it felt like to me. So while she is a great character in theory and in the first book, i found her a bit dragging in this one and as if she was spinning in circles while she was trying to figure out what she was, who she was and what she wanted to do.
As i already said some parts of the book were rather predictable and i really didn't enjoy who the "traitor" was, that just.. for one that was predictable before it was "reviled " and then i just thought that making Keenan the bad guy was just a very, very easy way to get rid of the boy that was brought into the second book basically just to steer up trouble. Yes, maybe he becomes more important in later books, but in this one? He felt like he was just there to be this annoying extra that i could have lived without, honestly.
And since i am on that topic, the strange "love V thing (since its not a triangle if the boys are not interested in each other as well, people!)" didn't work for me.
For one because i wasn't sure if Tahir actually wanted to do a love triangle or just needed a distraction or way to push the story forward in some situations and the whole "he loves her, he loves her too, she loves them both, how ever will she choose?" stuff is just an easy way to add something to the story since there is always that kind of drama to fall pack on.
Which is just something i personally don't really love in books.
BUT this entire love stuff wasn't the biggest deal in the book, so while i didn't enjoy it, it also isn't a real negative thing because it wasn't one of the main focuses in the book -at least not the love V stuff, the love stuff was kind of important in itself but not as a whole (does that even make sense?)
I loved the cook in this, as i did in the first book!
I loved the ending of it, which to me actually is not cliffhanger-y at all? Are some people reading other endings than i am? because that ending was actually the kind of ending i would be happy with if the book series would have ended on that note?
More thoughts --> because we get the brother, awake and clearly at least a little able to understand what is happening, so he clearly doesn't have the biggest psychological damage, he could have gotten from that kind of prison. I liked where Laia and Elias left of, together but not in the lovey-dovey everything is happy and great and couldn't be better thing, because that would just be completely illogical to happen to this kind of book! I also liked where Helene ended up so that was pretty good as well...
I actually enjoyed the ending and it certainly is responsible for me giving this book the amount of stars i gave it.
All in all?
This book was good.
I found it slightly better then the first one -especially for the first read through compared to my first read through with the first book ;)- but also had a good amount of moments that i didn't enjoy overly much.
I do enjoy the book series so far, and this book certainly did not have the second book syndrome! So that was great to see!
I am excited to see where Tahir will take this story and this book series and what will happen with all the characters.
Even if i am not sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for the third book.
Which in itself is actually a good thing, right?
Who likes having this unbelievable need for the next book that makes you want to not read anything else if the third book doesn't even have a title yet?!
