This is probably the most multi-layered novel in the Culture series so far. A bit too much, actually, as some sub-plots can be a bit dull compared to the “main” ones.

Banks’ writing is stellar, as usual, and some of his characters are lots of fun, especially one of the ships. It’s just more enjoyable when it’s around. The villain is also excellent.

As is usual with Banks, the story has many implications and criticisms of our society and behaviour. They range from crimes like abuse of power or sexual assault to societal challenges of any sort.

It is enjoyable all the way, even though it slows down here and there. I would also have removed one of the storylines alongside the Hells. I enjoyed the Hells themselves, less so the Culture subplot linked to them.

Nevertheless, an excellent entry into the series, filled with Banks’ incredible imagination and literary qualities.
