Winterspell
by Claire Legrand
I really liked this book! I love the original story of the Nutcracker and this retelling was an adult version of it with many more magical elements in the story. Clara was a good lead character, I liked her devotion to her family, because she literally travelled to the end of the world to save her dad, even though he didn't exactly deserve it. The only think that bugged by about her was that sometimes her judgement was a bit clouded and she couldn't seem to decide how she feels about almost everyone. On some cases I can excuse it, but on Anise's case I was nearly furious with Clara!
Clara and Nicholas' relationship had its ups and downs but I loved the fact that they knew each other for so long, even if it was quite unconventional for a little girl to talk to a steel statue. Nicholas was very sweet with her and seemed to really care about her but the fact that he almost betrayed her didn't sit well with me. I guess it's because they both had different views on what needs saving: Clara's priority was saving her dad, while Nicholas wanted to free Cane from Anise's tyranny. Both noble causes if you ask me, but they just needed to work out their communication.
Regarding the writing style, I thought that the book was pretty well written, it was easy to read in the sense that it didn't bore me at all, and the action bits were pretty cool! The only issue I had with the book was the excessive nudity. After Clara met Anise, it seemed to me that they were naked every single moment they spent together and that made me feel a bit awkward. Actually Anise and Clara's whole relationship made me feel awkward and I didn't know what to make of it! I am not sure what exactly the author's goal was there, maybe to show us how similar Clara and Anise are? I don;t think the nudity is the best way to go, but oh well, it doesn't last forever, so I was glad when that part of the book ended!
All in all, "Winterspell" is a book I majorly enjoyed and will definitely read again! I like the plot, the plot twists, the action and the romance and I have to say it's a very fun read for anyone who loves the Nutcracker!
