All Kinds of Other by James Sie

"Pull down the shoulder straps of the binder that's covered my entire torso all day, one hard yank, shimmy-shimmy-shimmy, an instant prickle of relief as it passes over my stomach, past my hips and onto the floor."

There's a lot wrong with the trans representation in this book but that right there pretty much sums up all of it. That's not how that works. That's not how any of it works. A binder capable of falling over your hips very likely is a binder not doing any binding at all. It should not drop onto the floor like a dress you're removing; it comes off like a t-shirt. This author has no business writing a trans main character when he doesn't even know the basics of trans life.

Furthermore, you owe absolutely no one the knowledge you're trans, if you are. For so many people, including Jules himself, to act as if he were "tricked" is downright transphobic. Intention to show it that way or not, this is gross behavior when the only character calling it out is the trans kid himself.

Also, Jules, grow a backbone. It's gross how much of Jack's suffering is co-opted by Jules as his own because Jack dares to exist as trans. The teasing Jules gets over it all makes fun of Jack, yet we're meant to feel pity for Jules over it when Jack is the main target.
