The Black God's Drums by P. Djèlí Clark

(note: I am a white person, so obviously please listen to Asian and BIPOC reviewers before mine.)

REALLY don't want to give this book a messily two stars. It had really creative and enjoyable mythos and a fun fantasy/steam punk alt. reality. Though Creeper really read far beyond her 13 years, she still was a fun protagonist, and I of course loved the Captain!

But sadly I was left bitterly uncomfortable with the labeling of Asian people. Creeper meets quite a few, but misread one of them by an outdated term (a common term of the time, but still) , and after correction still refers to him only by his race than his name. Same with others she meets. Even after they are introduced she still sticks with only calling them by race. Seeing the author credit support from Justin's Ireland (who also treated Asian people in one of her book quite terribly) is possibly just coincidence, but oomph.
