The story is slow to start, but I love a good southern gothic so I stuck around and I'm so glad I did. I love the way Kidd shows Sarah and Handful growing from children to adults and the way in which they see the world (and how that view changes over the years).

When I got to the part about Sarah and Angelina's activism I found myself thinking, Wow, this an awful lot of poetic license for a historical novel. LITTLE DID I KNOW THAT IT WAS BASED ON A TRUE STORY. I was amazed and awed that all of those things really happened, and thoroughly disgusted that the American education system never taught me about these incredible women.

Highly recommend to someone looking for a feminist historical fiction tale based on truth, or any lovers of good southern drama.
