My mother is a CODA (child of deaf adults). Both of her parents, my grandparents, were born deaf. All 6 of her siblings and my mother are fluent in ASL. My grandmother and father both attended Gallaudet University (for less than a year). Reading this book both made me appreciate being a person who can hear as well as long for the connection that deaf culture has. It is so intimate and I find myself regretting not forcing myself to learn any modicum of ASL while my grandparents were alive and I was surrounded by so many relatives fluent in the language.
This book explores many facets of deaf living. Being a CODA, being a deaf person who can lip read and speak, being a deaf person who can only sign, and being a deaf person with cochlear implant. It shows you the pros and cons of the technology of cochlear's today, teaches you about deaf culture and history, as well as showing the troubles that deaf communities still face when living in a world that revolves around hearing people.
I felt a very special connection to this book and would recommend all people read it. There are deaf people in our society and will continue to be deaf people for a long time. Having patience and kindness towards those who are differently abled than you is pertinent, and this book gives you a look into that world and a newfound empathy for the deaf community.
