Circus of Wonders
by Elizabeth Macneal
I am so frustrated, sad mad, annoyed to the point that I think if I allow my eyes to roll back as they are so desperately trying that I'd hear a pop, due to the force of anger that is filled in my body.
First things first. This is NOT my normal genre. If this book had not been sent to me in a subscription crate it would not have been on my radar. The premise is good. Girl gets sold to the circus; the ringleader is a power hunger narcissist who sees her as a threat once her popularity surpasses his. Add a dash of unhealthy co-dependance of his brother who is harboring a dirty secret, and a fast love affair and BAM you got a lot of action and what ifs blowing your mind.
Except it doesn't happen, instead we get a bunch irrelevant crap taking up space. We meet characters with suggested relationships or importance who literally disappear and are never mentioned again after you have emotionally committed to them. Then, there is danger, so much perceived danger that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat asking "What's gonna happen, what's gonna happen, what the f*ck is gonna happen" ONLY to be crushed when something happens but it's not what you expected. And even then, you might try to reason, okay I can go with this. But then our MC just starts acting out of pocket and you just don't understand what level of crazy has overun the entire cast.
If this were a movie, it would win awards for music and costumes. But the acting would be B level. Meryl Streep wouldn't be able to help this.
I liked that we had multiple POVS. I hated that a majority of the book is in third person. I was sad that the sex scenes were worst than fade to black.
The ending and the epilogue hurt me. I feel betrayed. Like, I invested all this time and emotions, and I wanted the BEST for our MC. I wanted the bad guys to burn. I wanted a freaking HEA. "We were all rooting for you" - In my Tyra Banks voice (google it if you don't know the reference"
I feel so bamboozled.
Please note, I am a big romance reader, I like smut, I am capable of reading books outside my preferred genre and do not need sex for a love story to work. Clearly this was not the read for me. With that said it IS well written. It just wasn't the right book/author/ending for me.
