I’ll admit: contemporary isn’t something I normally read. I’d rather be consumed with fantasy, sci-if or a good thriller.

But, wow, did I enjoy Queenie! From the very first line I was hooked. And that hardly EVER happens to me.

There are so many reasons as to why this book is amazing!

It’s heartbreaking and intense, moving and funny, and so incredibly real. It hits hard with racism, mental health struggles, discrimination, sexual abuse, life and relationship struggles, the list goes on.

I loved Carty-Williams’s writing style, too. It’s quite a no-bullshit, tell it like it is, kinda vibe. And the characters she created were fantastic! It’s honestly the best contemporary book I’ve read so far. Granted that contemp list is short but still! It’s the best I’ve read.

I saw quite a few reviews saying how uncomfortable it is to read, or how it’s "AgAiNsT" white people but nah. It isn’t. It’s highlighting severe issues against POC. And, from my perspective, it’s MEANT to make you feel uncomfortable. I also think this book is super important to read whether you feel comfortable with the content or not. It’s an eye-opener and so, so real. Praise for Candice Carty-Williams
