I was not aware of the FWP and efforts to collect stories of slavery in the late 30s, nor of the contraband camps during the civil war that operated like a DP camp but weren’t much better than the former-slaves previous circumstances.

Fascinating concept that FDR put in place to not only capture history that so many wanted buried but it was a way to create jobs during the Depression. I’m sure many, if not most, of the stories were dumbed down because racism was still so rampant and there were repercussions to a black person being honest at the expense of a white person. But still, it was a step in the right direction.

The concept of hatred and injustice and facing forgiveness was a noteworthy one and very well done. So much of Frankie’s story was so heartbreaking and it was well conveyed the emotions and difficulty she warred with when faced with the decision of forgiveness or bitterness when she was well justified against the confederates. I thought the concept of God allowing awful circumstances was well handled and faced as well, and there couldn’t be a better character than Frankie. The scene towards the end with Rena and Frankie was incredibly moving and emotional.

Really great story and noteworthy.
