The Forever War
by Joe Haldeman
A read to complement [b:Old Man's War|36510196|Old Man's War (Old Man's War, #1)|John Scalzi|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1509467059l/36510196._SY75_.jpg|50700] and [b:Dauntless|112292|Dauntless (The Lost Fleet, #1)|Jack Campbell|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1309198180l/112292._SY75_.jpg|108122] and one I enjoyed to contrast with [b:Glory Road|50856|Glory Road|Robert A. Heinlein|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1389403992l/50856._SY75_.jpg|1862679] which explores some of the same themes through space-time manipulation just as my favorite [a:Kurt Vonnegut|2778055|Kurt Vonnegut|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1433582280p2/2778055.jpg] did so well. Yep, the universe might just be that uncaring about human fates, yep human nature might lead to catch-22 just as often in space just as it does right here at home, in more unforgiving conditions and we still might have to deal with that. But somehow none of this is a downer, because humor, and SPACE travel, and a little bit of companionship or camaraderie can go a long way toward keeping a person semi-sane?
[b:The Hemingway Hoax|388952|The Hemingway Hoax|Joe Haldeman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1294097599l/388952._SY75_.jpg|1903764] is in some ways a tighter read without the happy ending. It plays with time too and is better and worse depending on your POV: it's got a more misogynist narrator's view of the female characters but a more clever, faustian treatment of time.
