When You See Me
by Lisa Gardner
| Book Review | When You See Me.

I remember reading Touch & Go by Lisa exactly two years back and instantly fell in love with her writing style. She builds the plot carefully, managing not to give away too much till the very end. There's a sense of suspense that hangs around your head when you pick up her book and one can't rest until getting to the bottom of it. When You See Me is Lisa's latest book and it came as no surprise that it was an immediate hit. Murder mysteries are probably the most difficult ones to pen down because there are so many spectacular books that have set up a high benchmark. But Lisa does it again and I'm not even remotely surprised :)

In the quaint town of Georgia, a body is found in the hills by a couple of trekkers. An investigation is instantly opened and the reins are handed over to FBI Special Agent Kimberly Quincy and Sergeant Detective D.D. Warren. A detailed analysis reveals that the body belongs to a young adult who disappeared almost fifteen years ago. When Flora is brought in to help with the investigation, people begin to wonder if it was the work of her previously deceased captor, Jacob Ness. What seems as a normal crime case soon turns into a full fledged mass murder scenario when many other bodies are discovered not too far away from each other. The cops suspect an involvement of the locals and something more sinister than just a regular murder.

Bonita remembers her mother's murder and the man who took her as a captive. Having been impaired because of an injury, she is confined to working in a B&B under false identity. She vows to kill the man who hurt her mother and many other girls. But Bonita doesn't know how to do it until she meets D.D. Warrens. After a lot of dead ends and thorough research, the cops close in on the culprit and are blown away by the illegal activities that were taking place for many decades. The secret to a good crime novel always lies in the guessing game and till the very last minute I was betting on the wrong guy.

This book is female oriented and the author has chosen to focus not only the gritty exterior attitude of the women but also managed to show their vulnerable side. It's clear that Lisa has done tremendous research before writing this book and it shows distinctly while she talks about forensics and many other police related procedure. Given that this is a hardcore thriller, it stayed true to its nature. The story was gripping and fast paced, something that kept me hooked till the last page. Although the entire novel was mindfully crafted, I did find couple of glitches at the very end and this is why I couldn't give it full stars. But in no way does this create a dent in the pace.I truly wish to read her other books and will particularly enjoy coming across Bonita in her next novels. If you are a fan of quick thriller reads then this one's for you. You won't be disappointed by the manner in which this story unfolds. I highly recommend it.
