What Hunts Inside the Shadows
by Harper L. Woods
Still pretty average fantasy romance that seemed to drag a lot more than book 1. Still has issues with editing (grammar, punctuation, missing words, extra words). We are on book 2 of this series about a magical realm, and we spend 900 pages of text not in that realm across 2 books, until the last little bit of this book. Developmentally, that is a long time to string readers along with promises of this kind of magical realm instead of getting there faster, then having some kind of issues there as the climax of this story.
I also had some issues with characterization. The FMC fluctuates so much in how she thinks, wanting to go somewhere then decided not to, wanting to spend eternity together then not wanting to. I can understand it to an extent, but it became repetitive and kind of obnoxious to read. We have big, scary enemies that we deal with for a few days, but then a giant show of overpowered strength gets rid of them in seconds. Like, why did we spend so much time with them if it was that easy to deal with the problem? There is this constant threat of overuse of new power, but never the actual consequences of using that power when untrained in a huge way, that probably should have happened when a human uses Fae power the likes that nobody has ever seen. 🤷🏼♀️
I don’t know. It just feels like the series as a whole needs to be worked on more with a developmental editor and a copy editor to figure out what can be adjusted to make the story flow better and clean up miscellaneous things that make the story feel and look messy.
