STUNNING.
Achingly beautiful and desperately terrible all at once. I am broken and in love. This is a book about courage, survival, friendship, grief, death, and love.
I cried at least 5 times. I don’t think another book has ever done that to me, and I’ve read A LOT of books about WWII. This was unique in that it gives a glimpse into the life of the working class German citizens, specifically children, who got swept up by the tides and ripple effects of Naziism — neither Nazis nor overt activists against Naziism, dedicated to self-preservation while also trying to find ways to act on their own humanity, demonstrate compassion, and help the persecuted when possible.
I have so much more to say… for now, this quote sums it up:
“I wanted to ask her how the same thing could be so ugly and so glorious, and its words and stories so damning and brilliant.” (p. 550)
