The Epic Crush of Genie Lo
by F.C. Yee
If you love Rick Riordan’s urban fantasies with their mix of humour and mythology but are sick of Greek/Roman/Norse-inspired lore, The Epic Crush of Genie Lo should be your next read. It was entertaining and genuinely funny with a great cast of characters.
• Genie was an incredible protagonist. Her sass had me smiling and holding back genuine laughter. I loved that she was quick-tempered and feisty without putting other girls down.
• … but I didn’t like Quentin. The descriptions of his hotness were tiring.
• I felt a little weird about his relationship with Genie. I know that their age difference is sort of up in the air but it was a tad gross. Maybe if it had been addressed it would have made it slightly more bearable?
• The mythology was brilliant.
• The plot was too predictable and second half’s pacing suffered.
• Like I said, there were moments that genuinely made me laugh out loud but the tone of the story as a whole felt more suited to a middle grade audience.
Overall? I am very open to continuing with this series. It was entertaining and something a little different; if only the plot had been stronger.
