Biased: Uncovering the Hidden Prejudice That Shapes What We See, Think, and Do
by Jennifer L. Eberhardt
A few years ago, I had the fortunate opportunity to have lunch with Dr. Eberhardt and some other campus activists. She offered keen insights to help us think through potential responses to an outside investigator’s report which claimed our campus police department’s data reflected national trends, therefore the evident bias “did not rise to the level of actual bias.” Naturally, I was excited to read this book and it did not disappoint. I don’t share her level of openness to “community policing” approaches and am skeptical of some of the policing technologies she mentions, but overall Dr. Eberhardt offers highly nuanced yet very readable analysis in this book. This is one of those resources I’ll be recommending to folks in a lot of different contexts for a long time.
