Saint X by Alexis Schaitkin

Thank you to Celadon for the ARC.

I’m a little on the fence with this book, to be honest. I really liked the concept of it and how the story was laid out: we get the perspectives of multiple characters on the same events, and we have to piece together the story ourselves. None of the characters know the whole story, so that method was intriguing to me.

However, my main issue is with the characters. I didn’t really sympathize with any of them, so that left me not really caring what happened to any of them. It also took me a week and a half to finish this book, which is rare for me. It was a slow beginning. I thought the intrigue of the mystery would make me read faster to find out what happened, but I found myself bogged down in inconsequential details and, at times, overly flowery language. I love a good story about an antihero, but these characters just left me feeling apathetic.

I felt like the ending was also anticlimactic, but that may have been the point. Sometimes a murder mystery turns out to have just been a senseless accident. I personally felt a little let down by the ending after investing so much time in a story I didn’t really care for. But I guess my lack of interest throughout the book should have warned me I was in for a letdown
