Beyond Magenta: Transgender Teens Speak Out
by Susan Kuklin
I'm glad this book exists--I think it's a very approachable introduction to trans* concepts. Although this is in depth interviews with 6 different teens, which obviously can't be totally inclusive of everyone's experiences, I think it has a lot more diversity than the sort of typical media narrative of transition (MTF, very glamorous and traditionally femme-looking) and just shows that there are so many more possibilities. (Of course it could be MORE diverse--but, again, it's a good start.)
The portraits are compelling. There are also pretty good resources in the backmatter, although--at this point this book is 2 years old so honestly some of it's already dated. Hopefully there will be a new edition or another book along these lines?!
