If you're looking for a dreamy, gothic, sorrowful tale set in a haunted Hacienda in the Philippines, have I got a rec for you! Solita was a surprise find for me, and as someone who's trying to read more books by Filipino authors, this was an exciting book to stumble across.
While I do believe this book has some pacing issues (especially in the middle) and some surface level side characters, where it shines is in it's prose and our main character, Sadie. She is a young woman drowning in grief, and that loneliness and despair creeps across every page until it sinks into the reader's bones. From that emerges some stunning passages that muses on human suffering and an abundance of religious imagery that brings to life the gothic themes promised in this book. I have so many highlighted lines that gave me delighted chills when I first read them.
This is a strong debut from a new author, and I'm eager to read the next book in this series!
