An incredibly powerful read, especially for such a short novel. There is a lot to think about in this little narrative. Well-written commentary on culture, society, and the tendency to ignore the bad things around us even when we should be doing our best to protect one another.
Wrapped up in a magical realism setting and a utopian style future, there is a lot of imaginative work at play in the story and it comes together incredibly well. There were moments that were slightly difficult for me to adjust to as a reader due to altered talking styles, but these also added a lot of authentic touches that made Jam and her family a realistic unit rather than an overly stylized one.
Highly recommend for YA and adult readers. A fantastic think piece and a great novel for book clubs wishing to debate on hot topics. This will be a read that I will be returning to in the future.
