I only now realize that I never wrote a review of what is probably my favourite sci-fi novel so far. Hyperion is extremely well written, deep and creative. Simmons’ take on the Canterbury Tales is very, very well thought out.

Most characters are relatable in a way or another (even when they are mean a**holes), some tales will leave you crying on the floor while others will make you laugh. The Shrike is one of the most poignant creatures I’ve read about.

Oh and yes, read The Fall of Hyperion, it is highly rewarding and brings this story arc to an end. Hyperion is basically « part one ».

This book is proof that sci-fi can be « deep » literature, for those who still doubt it. Very highly recommended.
