Act Cool
by Tobly McSmith
Really appreciated this story about staying true to yourself when that's the only thing you've been told to reject your whole life.
.
August has just run away from home after discovering his parents were going to send him to conversation therapy, learning he was trans.
He finds shelter in New York with his aunt and decides to perdue his dreams as an actor.
August lives a double life with his new friends and with his family, never really being true to either side.
.
Having faked who he was all his life, it is hard for him to truly be himself without being scared of what people might think. He doesn't always make the best choices, his anger can take over and his fake it til you make it technique can really drive him overboard. But that's what made him feel so real to me.
I love all the growing he does through.
.
What I appreciated most were the friendships that got developed withing this story. A diverse cast of theatre kids all dealing with their own lives and impacting our Main characters in great ways.
No need to say the found family dynamics made me swoon.
All the stars go to the aunt. Power to family members who act like better parents than actual parents.
