Jasper Vale by Devney Perry
3.0

I had such high hopes for this book and it was one of my most anticipated reads of 2023, but it wasn't great. It was mediocre at best and I kind of feel like I'm being generous with the stars, but...
I truly loved the concept of getting accidentally (drunkenly) married in Las Vegas, and this had so much potential to be amazing. But it was so problematic and there were so many things wrong with this book. First of all, Jasper comes up with the idea to get married in Las Vegas, EVEN THOUGH HE MARRIED SOMEONE ELSE THERE BEFORE, AND IN THE EXACT SAME CHAPEL. Like, why??? Of all the plot twists or whatever, that was the one you chose? Which, by the way, he doesn't tell Eloise this fact until way later. He also tells Eloise that they should stay married just until he can take her to his ex-wife's wedding as his date, basically to rub it in her face that he is "winning" AND HE STILL TAKES HIS EX-WIFE'S CALLS. He really still has her number, still takes her calls, still lets her berate him and put him down when there's an option to, I don't know, BLOCK HER AND CUT HER OUT OF YOUR LIFE? I really hate other woman drama but this was weirdly toxic and just strange. Jasper really treats Eloise kind of crappy, with a few instances of him being "nice" or "caring" but that's sort of a stretch. He does get better at like, the 60% mark of the book, but only marginally so. He does stand up for Eloise both to her own family and his ex, but he treats her differently behind closed doors. He can be standoffish, aloof and not communicative, despite the fact that they are married and supposed to be making it work, even for the fake part of it but also when they actually decide to give it a go for real later on. He doesn't even tell her about this trip he is going on (for a job interview, which he also doesn't tell her about) and she basically finds out about it when she comes home and finds his stuff gone. He doesn't have time to tell her about this "last minute interview" but finds the time to stock the fridge full of food for her so that she doesn't have to worry about meals. Are you kidding me??? And the whole drama with the kid at the hotel and his backstory and the shooting and Jasper only realizing he loves her and wants to be with her AFTER they almost die (he does save her life, but that doesn't take away his bad behavior) was just random and unnecessary and too much. I think the spice in here was pretty good and probably the most amount of spice in any Devney Perry book but that was probably the only redeeming factor, along with getting to see the other characters from the other books, like Memphis and Knox and Winslow and Griffin. I truly think, now four books into this series, that Juniper Hill was a one hit wonder and that Crimson River will be disappointing too.
