I finished up Annihilation this morning in bed and I’m still not sure what I made of it. It’s creepy for sure, I loved the atmosphere, the little hints of something very, very wrong from beginning. There were a couple of moments where my stomach or jaw literally dropped and I felt the sense of dread on my own skin. But there were also a lot of sections where I felt nothing at all. My eyes would begin to glaze over and I’d have to reread whole pages to try and find the thread again. To be fair, this might have something to do with the fact I’m only just emerging from a bit of a reading slump, but only partially.
.
I definitely liked it enough to continue with the rest of the trilogy, although I’m not in a great hurry to do so. I liked the way the characters weren’t named, only referred to by their professions, as it shrouded the whole thing in secrecy, giving it a real feel of a clandestine governmental report. That, together with the environmental aspect, lent the book an eerie sense of ‘this could really happen’, which always makes a sci fi or horror novel more ominous!
