Mahu by Neil S. Plakcy

The majority of this book outside of the mystery/crime element is Kimo struggling with his sexuality, up to and including some rather telling internalized homophobia, what with the way "fag" and "faggy" were thrown about. Kimo mentions in the narrative how tense and upset he feels when someone else says it around him (not being out yet at this point), but then just pages later mentions how "faggy guys just don't do it for [him]".

Not exactly subtle, but it did make me as the reader feel very uncomfortable for Kimo in a visceral way. Hats off to successful emotional warfare, Mr. Plakcy.

I'm still holding out for him and Dr. Takayama.
