Nightcrawling is about a young Black girl living in Oakland, struggling to survive, and trying to find a way to support herself, her brother, and her kid neighbor. This is a hot one on bookstagram right now & I can see why.
Nightcrawling is slow and intense, a dark, sad, and heartbreaking read - you really have to be in the mood for it. I was blown away by the writing, it is beautiful and poetic. The words and the story captivated me within the first few pages.
However, Nightcrawling was hard to read. I felt very uncomfortable reading this, cringing at times because of what Kiara went through…and just as a child. She was 17 years old and was trying to make it on her own. Doing whatever it took to pay the rent and put some food on the table. She had to grow up so fast and make decisions she should have never had to make. I would get so pissed and put the book down every few days. Each time she had an interaction with those corrupt cops…I had to step away for a bit. But as I would take a few days to break from reading it, I would still be thinking about Kiara and her story. And I still am, this book will stick with me for a while.
