Playing Games by Riley Hart
3.5
funny lighthearted medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

I just felt like there could have been more depth in the characters, they had a lot of back story with their families that I felt was just glossed over, making the plot seem a little shallow

January 2024 Reread:

I rated this pretty low my first time reading it and I couldn't really remember why so I was really interested in rereading it. Surprisingly, it was also my first Riley Hart book. I kind of had the same sentiments from my first short review, but I enjoyed their banter a lot more this time around.

Brax is the bad boy bartender who hates jocks, especially Tyson Langley. They constantly get on each other's nerves and love to infuriate one another. When Ty needs to get a job, he ends up working at the bar with Brax. Being in close proximity heightens their tension and it doesn't take long for them to start hooking up.

I liked Brax and Ty's relationship. It was easy and low angst. Their banter was really fun and I loved the back and forth. They both are kind of self aware idiots and love to deny their feelings, but are also always there for one another with no judgement. It was also pretty adorable how they only ever wanted to spend to time with each other, and didn't even care what people thought. Their laid back dynamic is why I liked the book more the second time around.

I was still a little let down my the outside plot. They both have a good amount of family problems that could have been really angsty and that were barely touched on. It just lacked some of the depth and conflict that I felt there was potential for.

A light short read with some favorite tropes. Nothing ground breaking but cute. It was fun to be back in the Franklin U world! I'm looking forward to rereading my other favorites from the series.

Read if you like:
• grumpy/sunshine
• hate-ish to love
• jock (lacrosse) x bad boy
