I was really skeptical about this books and this was actually my second attempt at reading it. The first time was for the BookTube-A-Thon and I choose it but I wasn't in the mood for it but I couldn't find anything else for that challenge that I owned, so I picked it up. After about a chapter in I closed the book and started another. I just couldn't get into it.
So Attempt 2. I finished the book and I loved it!
Writing:
I loved the writing style. I love books that when reading you can easily visualise the place they are talking about and that was the case for this book. It was a book that I couldn't put down until I was literally falling asleep at 3 in the morning... I also loved the addition of the pictures. It added to the effect of the book and I thought it made it a little creepier, which I loved. This isn't a scary book, just putting that out there, at first, I thought that's what it was meant to be. However, it's no scarier than any other fantasy novel I have read.
Plot:
I really enjoyed the plot. It was interesting and always kept you guessing, there was only one little bit at the end that I guessed before it happened, but if you paid close attention to the story in the middle then you would guess it just like I did. I think that's how it was meant to be. The plot was like nothing I have ever read before. The book also ended on kind of a cliffhanger, I guess you could call it. It defiantly leaves you wanting to read the second book to find out what's going to happen (I've already ordered them online, even though I told myself to stop buying books, my bad!)
Characters:
I really adored all the characters in this book.
Jacob is the protagonist and narrator and was a really interesting character and I loved how he reacted to things and his kind of witty sarcasm at times, even if he was only thinking it.
Even though we didn't see much of Abraham Portman (Jacob's grandfather), I still really enjoyed him. I liked how he left the clues for Jacob which is the reason he ended up on this crazy adventure!
Jacob's Father, Franklin, I still don't know how I feel about him, he is an interesting character and has a back story, but because of how the book ended I don't really know.
Emma was also an interesting character, her backstory was intriguing and I loved learning about it in the book. I liked that when she first meets Jacob at first, she was cautious and doubtful and then we see her as a strong and caring character, I like that character development and seeing people put their shields down as they get to know another character.
Millard, I liked that even though he had the power that he did he didn't abuse it and was actually kinda strict and sensible at times.
I liked some of the other children as well, but I can't go into much detail without spoiling things about them which I feel like you need to read first hand in the book to get the magic of it all.
Overall:
I did really enjoy this book and that why I gave it 5 stars! I can't wait to get my hands on the other two books when they come in the mail! Defiantly a book worth reading if you like fantasy reads.
