ros_lanta 's review for:
The Whispering Skull
by Jonathan Stroud
After reading book one I was doubtful whether the series really fits well into the middle grade category, and I'm even more doubtful about book two. I can't help thinking it would be better classified as teenage/young adult, albeit I would describe it as series than could be read and enjoyed by older children and adults too.
Once again I had a great time with this, with an interesting plot and compelling characters. The worldbuilding in this universe is significantly more complex than I normally expect from a ghost story, feeling almost like a post-apocalyptic dystopian setting. There's plenty of tension and horror but also lighter moments and found family.
The TV show follows the events of the book closely enough that I did go into this knowing the majority of what would happen. I'm looking forward to reading book three, which was sadly not adapted before the TV show was cancelled so will be completely new to me - and I'm particularly keen to find out more about that final reveal...
