Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence
by Daniel Goleman
The first half of this book has some valuable information, stuff that I took with me about focus into my daily life. The second half devolves into a long treatise on leadership that I skimmed, an act counterproductive to the entire premise of the book, but one that I couldn't read with any level of interest. The first half speaks of focus and brain chemistry and stuff relevant to everyone. The second half is either a plea to the leaders of the world to be more conscious or an advertisement for the author's upcoming seminars - I couldn't parse out which.
So, in all, a mixed bag, but there is some good information on the idea of focus in here. It's pretty left leaning, on the whole, which I would be a fan of if it didn't feel like coastal elite left - folks talking about the need to change the world in their wine caves and so forth. That said, I doubt I'll read Emotional Intelligence because this guy's writing style kind of bothers me. It's always a "personal story followed by some facts" routine that is tired as hell and reminds me too much of political commercials/speeches.
