The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
by Suzanne Collins
Reread 11/23
3.5 stars. I’m as shocked as anybody that my rating rose this high!! I think the anticipation for the movie succeeded in piquing my interest in this, and I gotta appreciate it for what it does in expanding the worldbuilding of Panem/the Games and the deep analysis of the nature vs nurture debate. Collins is just so masterful at working so many powerful ideas into her books and sparking such interesting conversations. I still think it’s just too long— the first half really drags. I don’t think I’d want to reread this again; Snow is truly so despicable and I’m happy that Collins showcased that with no remorse. I think it’s interesting that she choose not to write more about his rise to presidential power, which I think might’ve fueled my initial disappointment with the book as that’s what I would’ve expected. But this reread really opened my eyes to the small nuances and I can appreciate it more.
I’m so excited to see what the movie does with it! I also would love for Collins to continue writing books in Panem (COUGH HAYMITCH AND FINNICK COUGH COUGH COUGH) because she does such a great job with the worldbuilding!

This book had NO BUSINESS being this long
